bo7 bot lobby was criticized by many players after its release. Zombies mode was still high-quality, even though the single-player campaign and core systems were not very good.
The feedback from players indicates that mmoset Zombies is losing interest. It’s not to criticize Black Ops 7’s Zombies mode, but to examine some of the issues that have been raised and possible areas for improvement.
Development Team
It is possible to trace the root of these problems back to 2021 when the Zombies team was given a leadership role overseeing all Call of Duty games. They had to not only manage their projects, but also help other studios and even handle Warzone content. This led to team burnout.
The unified game engine also has resulted in a growing similarity between Zombies gameplay and other modes such as Warzone. Recently, the official apology was issued, confirming they will not resemble Modern Warfare and Black Ops going forward. This suggests that future developments of Zombies could be even better than previous years.
Narrative Regression
The narrative of Zombies mode is actually better, particularly the environmental storytelling in maps. This is far superior to Cold War and Black Ops 6. However, the pacing still remains an issue.
Black Ops 6 has a similar problem. Although the opening cutscenes of BO7’s map were engaging, subsequent cutscenes did not provide much plot progress until the end. The developers have promised to create opening animations for every new turn-based maps, but this hasn’t solved the problem.
Consider the Astra Malorum opening map: It’s visually stunning but the characters don’t have any dialogue. This was one of the appeals of previous Zombies modes. Character interaction in cutscenes and in-map dialog, as well as Easter eggs, all work together to create a cohesive narrative.
CoD Black Ops 6 & 7’s narratives are slow and lacking in information. Cold War’s top-tier Intel provided a solid base for the Dark Aether storyline. Unfortunately, this was not fully realized in CoD Vanguard or Modern Warfare 3.
Astra Malorum
Astra Malorum DLC Map is a direct indication of the decline in Zombies mode.
It’s a good map with a challenging Easter egg, a tough boss fight and a great visual presentation. Astra Malorum’s hype is the lowest it has been since Black Ops 4
This fatigue is also due to the release of multiple Black Ops sub-series games.
Ray Gun was the reward for a side quest in Astra malorum that players discovered only recently. It is surprising that it took so long for players to discover this attractive reward.
Insufficient Rewards
It is important that the content of the endgame is interesting for a game like Black Ops 7. It’s not just about new modes, but also about new items, new secrets and progression. Endgame rewards should be sufficient for both hardcore zombie players as well as those who want to improve their skills.
The reward system is currently the biggest issue with Zombies. The Relics Hunt in Cursed Mode is virtually untouched, as players can now directly activate Tier 3 Curses using Relics from the Ashes of the Damned Map.
What is the incentive for players to play for 40 or even 60 rounds in order to get more Relics, other than experiencing different difficulty variations? Other means are available to players for obtaining Tier 4 Pack-a-Punch weapons, ultra-rare items, and Golden Armor.
The game has an almost ready-made solution that’s just been ignored. Players who collect enough relics and complete the Easter Egg while it is active can get a Universal Pack a Punch Camo.
The menu already has this system, but it allows you to change skins only during matches. This is a waste.
This reward would encourage players to test themselves and also bring in players from Warzone and Multiplayer to the Zombie Mode and Cursed mode to compete with Easter eggs and to use this cool camouflage.
The Cursed Mode is a great concept. It extends the life of maps. The current issue is that rewards for difficult challenges are not enough. It is this lack of motivation that causes hard-core players to not challenge themselves. Casual players also give up because the challenges are too difficult.
How do I solve this?
In order to solve this problem first, we must address the issue of rewards. The only way to attract enough players is with generous rewards.
At the moment, unlocking Relics’ camouflage works like finding a menu. Players have to figure out how to unlock it themselves. The system could be altered so that the conditions for unlocking Relics are stated explicitly when the player equips the Relics. This would encourage players to take on more challenging content in order to reach their goals.
A map’s Easter Egg should also be unlocked when a certain Relic combination is obtained. Players’ interest will continue to decrease if only fixed rewards, such as Golden Armor, are available all year.
Adding dialogue to the cutscenes and increasing rewards could help revive interest in Zombies Mode.
CoD BO7’s Zombies mode doesn’t require major changes. Future Call of Duty games can completely revamp the gameplay. As we move into the new year, the current goal is addressing the issues mentioned above and reigniting community interest.
How Better Rewards Could Save It?
